Flip the Switch -- Rewire your Mind for Sales Success

Every sales professional wants to be successful and enjoy the journey.  However, many of us waste a lot of time believing the misconceptions that joy and success come from our situation when they actually come from our attitude towards the situation we face.  Surely, nobody enjoys a troubling or unforeseeable experience such as losing an account to a competitor, but if we look at it as a learning experience, we can watch things unfold to our benefit provided we put in the effort and adjust our approach.

Enjoying the sales journey begins with the thoughts we choose to think.  Wrong mindsets can keep us dealing with the same problems, never really making any progress.  Did you know that whenever we think or say something negative, we actually give our power away?  We end up feeling angry, defensive, frustrated and unhappy.  That’s because our thoughts are intricately connected to our feelings; if we want to feel better, we need to think better and pay attention to the words we speak.  Do you spend time complaining, gossiping, boasting?  Nothing good comes from thinking dreadful, critical, and negative thoughts; something good always comes when we trust that everything works together for our good and contributes to our personal and professional growth.

When we change the quality of your thinking, we change the quality of our lives.  However, choosing good thoughts does not mean that positivity comes upon us with no effort on our part.  We consciously need to shift our attention to better alternatives and instead choose encouraging and inspiring thoughts and self talk the minute we catch ourselves going down the slippery slope of negativity.  We enter the danger zone when we leave our minds unguarded.  Our old programming will try to fill our minds with “give up” thoughts if we allow it. No matter what is going on while you’re out in the field today, if you will choose happy, hope-filled thoughts, you will feel joyful and empowered.  Follow-through and determination are key to seeing good outcomes.

Here are some scenarios to help you flip the switch when you catch yourself slipping into the negative.

ON: “I have a bright future ahead of me.  Unlimited opportunities are opening in my territory.”

OFF:  “My future is determined by my past failures and my present circumstances.”

ON: “I always take responsibility for my actions.  I accept the truth about myself so I can grow and change.”

OFF:  “My reaction may be wrong, but it’s not my fault.”

ON: “I have the power to persevere and succeed.”

OFF:  “The obstacle before me is too big.”

ON: “I am grateful for all the resources I have to help me achieve my goals.”

OFF:  “My quota is so big – I don’t see how I can make it happen.”

ON: “I am determined to see the good in every situation.  I will remain grateful and say things that are positive and uplifting.”

OFF:  “I can’t stop playing the old movie in my head and complaining.”

ON: “I take guided action and I am patient.  I trust things will unfold as they should when I put in the effort.”

OFF:  “I hate waiting and I feel discouraged.”

In summary, our success in life is manifested in our thoughts.  We are the architects of our future.

Whatever our thoughts are occupied with, that reflects the kind of outcomes we experience in our sales journey and life in general.  The more positive and optimistic we are, the happier we will be in our sales career and in every area of our life.  When we flip the switch from negative to positive we open the door for good to unfold in our lives.  It will take time and persistence, but when we learn to rewire our minds, we will be on our way to greater victory.
